Lake Miinocqua

Lake Minocqua

One of the most popular lakes in the Northwoods is Lake Minocqua.  The lake is an integral part of the town.  Minocqua (the town) is known as the “Island City” as the downtown area is an island within Lake Minocqua.

Lake Minocqua is located in northern Oneida County, Wisconsin. It is 1360 acres in area, with an average depth of 23 feet and a maximum depth of 60 feet. The name Minocqua means “noon day rest” which is translated from the Ojibwe word “Ninocqua”.

Water flows into the lake through two main sources, Minocqua Thoroughfare and Tomahawk Thoroughfare. The lake flows out to the Tomahawk River and Mid Lake and Lake Tomahawk.  The bottom is made up of 65% sand, 16% muck, 4% rock and 15% gravel.   Water clarity varies from 10’ to 13’. It is a mesotrophic lake. There are 6 islands on the lake.

There are 3 boat ramps.  One is next to the Thirsty Whale Bar and Restaurant.  One is on the downtown island just east of downtown off of Park St.  There is another in Stacks Bay and that is on the far eastern shore of the lake off of Brunswick Rd.

The lake is part of the very popular Minocqua Chain of 5 lakes.  On Lake Minocqua, there is the Thirsty Whale, Boat House, Yacht Club and newly opened Oak Fire.  Other bars and restaurants are a short walk from the public pier. The Minocqua Bats Ski Team performs here.  Torpy Park is a wonderful swimming beach that is right downtown.

Fish include musky, northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and panfish.
